Matchday Six brought another exciting round of matches with plenty of goals this time out. With all of the pre-season’s predicted top four playing at home, there was an expectation from many sets of away fans to upset the records- in particularly with the Haitian supporters of Moko-Jumbies FC who would be cheering on Liam Knapton and his side as they took on his older
brother’s league leading Jamrock
Juniors over at the Levi Roots Arena.
Jamtastic approached this battle of the brothers in magnificent form and many were expecting them to grab a fifth straight win in front of a near sell-out crowd. Things didn’t start well though and the Kitt Men, who were rising above expectations themselves, took a twentieth minute lead through Kimaree Rogers. The St Kitts and Nevis international was thrilled to grab his first goal for the club, although in the end it would not be enough to guide his side towards three points. Just after the half-hour mark Ajay Chin managed to find himself some space so he looked up, sought out Newton Sterling and allowed the front man to get his third goal of the campaign, his second in two games. And as if that wasn’t enough, Sterling was at it again just four minutes later as he rose highest from an Anthony Greenland corner to nod home with confidence. Chin’s great play down the wing again led to a cross into the box and after a soft clearance, a deflected shot and then a bounce in the box, Jabari Hylton was in the right place to make it three goals in four Jamtastic matches.
Second-place Republican Rabbits were also in great form and showed no signs of suffering a hangover from last week’s defeat as they beat free-falling Bajan Boppers thanks to goals from star forwards Erick Ozuna and Juan Vélez. Although Bop 2 da Top defended well, they registered zero shots on target all game and as we all know that is not a winning formula. Ozuna broke Bajan Boppers hearts on the stroke of half-time and Colombian mega-striker Vélez rounded the win off for Meadowcroft’s team just ten minutes into the second-half. This win will keep the Rabbits hopping along in second, just three points behind Jamtastic.
Over in Port of Spain, Limbo Leopards finally shook off the record of being the only winless side in the division as a thirty-second minute winner from Hayden Tinto helped them past Dominica Dominoes, meanwhile fellow strugglers Redonda Rockys were yet again undone by a late goal meaning that Bermuda Tempest snatched a point at Wa’omoni. Oscar Knapton’s Vodou People managed to make it three wins and three defeats from six as they strolled past Suriname Sharks as a result of goals from Yves Dorimain and defender Emerson Georges and in the weekend’s final game Sophie Dibbens and her Spicy Doves lost at home for the first time through a Liomar Croes spot-kick which sees Ajax Oranjestad move into third place.
With Matchday Seven just around the corner, the next big weekend in the Caribbean will see Ajax Oranjestad look to keep the pressure on the top two as they welcome Vodou People, a side just one point behind their hosts. Basement side Bajan Boppers host the leaders Jamrock Juniors and as we all know these top versus bottom matches aren’t always as straightforward as they seem. Fourth place Moko-Jumbies host Dominica Dominoes, Spicy Doves are at home again- this time against Limbo Leopards- and good pals Max Alderson and Andy Baxter lock horns as Suriname Sharks take on Redonda Rockys. The week’s fixtures are finalised over in the far reaches, with Bermuda Tempest looking to beat Juan Vélez and the Republican Rabbits.
