On a day where so much history was made, the drama and context meant so much more than the score lines, especially after a tense goalless draw at the Levi Roots Arena would give Jamrock Juniors just enough to lift the first ever Caribbean Mega League title at the expense of Moko-Jumbies FC, who would have pipped Jamtastic to the post had they been able to beat Suriname Sharks. Yes, Daz Knapton will bid the Caribbean farewell as the champion of the CML.
As it was though, the occasion got the better of the Kitt Men as Liam Knapton was bettered by his own cousin at Sugar Lane in front of a bumper crowd in St Kitts. In a game of few chances, the Nethermen arrived ready to ruin the possible party for the hosts and although relegation seemed almost impossible for the Surinamese side, they did have to earn at least a point to certainly confirm their place in next season’s league. No goals came in the first-half but midway through the second Mitchell Kisoor signed off for the year by thrashing home the goal of the weekend and one of the contenders for the season award to almost seal Moko-Jumbies’ fate. However with the fans behind their side’s back, the Kitt Men roared one last time and with six minutes left on the clock left-back Petrez Williams scored his first career goal to give just a glimmer of hope. Sadly though that’s all it was for the home side and their 1-1 draw, combined with the 0-0 in Jamaica between Jamtastic and Spicy Doves, made sure that they would have to dust themselves off and begin preparations for the World Mega Shield which kicks-off in England next month.
Over in the Hispaniola derby we’d see a match which up until recently was being tipped by many as being the one to look forward to as third place Vodou People hopped across the border to play Republican Rabbits in what could be Tom Meadowcroft’s last game. The hosts needed to do better than Ajax Oranjestad against Dominica Dominoes to guarantee their place in the postseason continental shield and when you are a team who has only won two from thirteen it was never never going to be easy. Vodou People had already secured their place in the shield and were out of contention for the title, so eking out a 0-0 draw would prove to be nothing short of a formality for them as they mainly seemed content with the thought of knocking the Rabbits out of the top four. Unfortunately for Tom, the result over in Dominica was one that meant Max Alderson’s shock side from Aruba clinched the final space in the top four and will join Jamrock, Moko-Jumbies and Vodou People in the big time. A very disappointing end to Meadowcroft’s stint in the Caribbean after he’d promised so much more than a meagre fifth place finish.
Another side who would have been metaphorically and physically kicking themselves after matchday twenty-two were Limbo Leopards who also missed out on that much sought after fourth place finish after losing to Redonda Rockys. A 2-0 home win wasn’t enough to save Da Rockz from the relegation playoff, but it did mean Will Clark’s side dropped all the way down to eighth in the table. The final game of the weekend saw two sides already committed to the dreaded relegation battle, in the form of Bajan Boppers versus Bermuda Tempest, with Bop 2 da Top leapfrogging the Trianglists are a 1-0 victory.
