After another exciting weekend of Caribbean Mega League action there were three home victories and three games that ended all-square, but ultimately we are now at the business end of the season and the thing that really matters is points and positions. Bottom of the table won, top of the table lost. Oh yes, going into the final five matches there is still so much to play for.
Having gone eleven games without a win, up until recently Dominica Dominoes have been dreadful and although Wes Carter’s side may have left it a little late to force themselves out of the bottom four, two wins in their last four matches mean that their fate is at least still in their own hands. Doms gave a great account of themselves this weekend and with a 2-1 victory meaning that they scored two goals in a match for the first time, things are perhaps looking up just at the right time. Their opponents today, who beat them by the same scoreline in the reverse fixture, were the inconsistent Limbo Leopards and after falling behind to an early Brad Richards strike the Leopards finally woke up and looked more like the top-half side they’ve recently been threatening to be. For the second time in two weeks it was a right-back who led the way in scoring for the visitors, but this time it was Jason Eastman who squared things up in the fifty-fourth minute and when his goal at LIME Stadium flew past Glenson Prince, it seemed that things were going to follow the script. Chad Bertrand had other ideas though and notched the winner with fifteen minutes left to go.
Meanwhile at the other end of the table, there would be a big win for Moko-Jumbies FC at the summit of the table as they brushed aside the leaders in a 2-0 victory at Sugar Lane. With the other two title chasers both drawing 0-0, the chance was there for Jamrock Juniors to pull away but in a match that saw Jamtastic missing a couple of players through suspension they struggled to take advantage of their situation. Javeim Blanchette’s fourth goal of the season set the Kitt Men on their way in the latter stages of the first-half before a late counter-attack led to Kennedy Isles sealing the points which move the St Kitts side back into third place and only two points off that top slot.
The midtable places are all still up for grabs too and with only three points separating fifth and tenth spots, today’s results only added to the tension that is likely to build in the coming weeks. A stubborn Suriname Sharks side held Vodou People to a 0-0 draw in Aruba, whilst eighth place Ajax Oranjestad kept Spicy Doves at arm’s length following a 1-1 result. A rarely impressive Bermuda Tempest beat Redonda Rockys 2-0 at the Hidden Ground and Bajan Boppers fell into the bottom two despite a plucky draw against Tom Meadowcroft’s Republican Rabbits.
Next week could see Dominica Dominoes jump to within just three points of safety and one point from lifting off the bottom of the table, but to do so they’ll have to beat a thirsty Moko-Jumbies FC side who have sat in the top four since Matchday Two. The two joint-top sides Jamrock Juniors and Vodou People will take on Bajan Boppers and Ajax Oranjestad at their respective homes and Republican Rabbits are also in home action as they look to stay in touch with the top teams by beating relegation fighters Bermuda Tempest. Top-half team Limbo Leopards could fall from a height if they can’t overcome the Spicy Doves at St Stern’s Park and the Matchday will be rounded off nicely with sixth versus seventh in the shape of a battle between Suriname Sharks and Redonda Rockys. Only five fixture to go and anything could still happen in the Caribbean Mega League.
